dashboard
/ˈdæʃ.bɔːd/noun
A screen that brings together selected data, statuses or measurements to provide insight into a situation or process.
The dashboard shows which orders are at risk of being delayed today.
A dashboard might show revenue to a director or outstanding tasks to a planner. Its contents should answer the user's question. A collection of charts without a clear purpose rarely provides a useful overview.
Define what a figure means
Every figure needs a definition. Does revenue mean invoices issued or payments received? Are cancelled orders included? When several systems supply data, their definitions need to agree.
Data freshness should also be visible. A dashboard updated once a day may suit a weekly meeting but be unsuitable for directing warehouse operations throughout the day.
From overview to explanation
An unusual figure often raises another question. Filters or links to the underlying records help users investigate the cause.
